Follow-up post:  Obtained reference materials *OS 8 For Dummies* and *Dead 
Mac Scrolls;* followed procedure outlined to remove old grease and lube 
with WD40.  Drive ejected manually with ease.  However, on returning to the 
Mac it still would not eject under OS command.  Concluded that the eject 
mechanism was at fault, replaced with similar Sony obtained from eBay.  
Drive now operates as expected.
