Like Eddy & Johnathan said, that drive is IDE/ATA. Definitely easy to find a cheap replacement.
For the second part of your question, if you do have another drive that is SCSI with an OS on it and have the right adapters, you can plug in and it you can probably boot from it. Is this a beige G3 or B&W?
