I had a Qume CrystalPrint Publisher II with
"emulated" PostScript Level 1. Worked great
as a LaserWriter IINTX with System 6 or a LaserJet
II+ with Windows 3.1. (It had RS-232/422, Parallel
Centronics, and MacSerial/AppleTalk ports.)
But with System 7+ or Windows 9x native drivers
it was hobbled back to bare bones generic
LaserWriter or LaserJet specs. Apparently Adobe
and HP "tightened up" the specifications to
make the older printers with unlicensed emulations
of PostScript and PCL _almost_ unusable. I was
tempted to try the Windows 3.1x LW IINTX or
LJII+ drivers, but gave up on the flinking thing
since every few pages would streak bad. The System
6 drivers it came with just would not work with
Mac OS 7.6. Qume did release System 7.1 drivers
but they are impossible to find. The remains of
Qume will only talk to you if you have a Qume
terminal. "Printers? Uh? We made printers?" :P
Adobe has ONE Qume PPD file for Mac or Win on their
PPD site but it's for one of the last models of
Qume only.
So if you see a Qume printer for sale, run away!
Run away! :)
