well..my little home for orphaned 68K's seems to be up and running. my
first IIfx, Big Frankie(Francis Xavier) finally lent his mailorder bride
Effie (the second IIfx, an ebay win) his video card, and she came out of
her shook -up experience on her trip west and was finally able to see
straight and make us understand her. don't know why, but for some reason
that maybe one of you can explain, her video card caused her picture to
fracture and scatter unreadably. but when Fankie gave her his and he
took hers, both of them cleared up and saw eye to eye.
i shoulda written it down so i could tell you all what she had and what
he had.

she's using the 12"RGB right now with frankie's video card, and clear as
a bell. and now that she can communicate, I'm impressed with her
education. she came witha 750meg hard drive and loaded with things
frankie doesn't have. one of which is stuffit expander, but no stuffit!
no prob, john mcGibney just sent me the latter, so Effie's gonna have
both. Frankie's only got 100 mb by contrast--a man of just a few
straighforward talents ( a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do).
little winkie twosi (IIsi) for the moment is happy to sit there
headless, burbling and playing in her own little world until I decide
who's gonna get what monitor.
I put the performa plus monitor on frankie and it came up fine with
Effie's video card--and i could slap my forhead for being so dumb the
last time. you were all correct. a simple change in the monitor control
panel to 256 colors brought it up to color. so now Effie's got herself
a nice ladylike dusty rose desktop, and clock to go with it, and I gave
ole Frank a nice southwestern weathered turquoise denim kinda desktop--i
think he's kinda like the Black Angus guy. and winkie's got her little
yellow duckies on baby blue.

the next shift is gonna be to try out all these VGA monitors on ole
frank, and see if he can handle any of em. and then see if Effie can use
the performa plus, cos winkie needs her RGB back pretty soon. the others
are just huge and overwhelming on her. the kid doesn't need to look
like the elephant man, ya know? and I gotta change her...no, not
diaper--her PRAM battery. she's stuck on 1956 and 24 bit addressing
until i do.

you guys are gonna have to teach me how to move stuff off the hard
drives over onto the removable external 2 gig drive, and how to move
stuff back and forth from Effie to frank and vice versa. if i can score
another atto scsi II card for Effie, i figure i can condense most of the
best from each onto the 2 gig external drive and use it on whichever one
I want, whenever. for the time being, I can always just move the sccsi
II card in frankie back and forth from one to the other, depending on
which machine I want to siphon stuff off of, onto the 2 gig.

i swear, i am so new, i don't even know how ya put a floppie in and waht
to do with it.' but the dumbest question is the one you don't ask. so
here we go.

Effie and winkiie have after dark already on them. it struck me that i'd
never seen frankie revert to screen saver, so i went inro the finder and
asked if there was anything anywhere that had the word 'screensaver' in
it, and a file for after dark came up on frankie, but the dialog box
told me to load the disc. so i have to assume he had it at one time but
it was trashed. i think I have a floppy set of it in a box of finds we
have. do i risk trying it? just put the first floppie in the reader
and..?
can it corrupt anything if its
a)not After Dark (say, if it was written over by a windows or mac
user?)
or
b) it is after dark, but something is wrong with it? can i check it over
with something before venuring further?
c) both Effie and frankie have ethernet cards installed. I have regular
cable and crossover cable. how do i hook those up between them so I can
load what Effie has over to Frank? Her version is more fun than winkii's
old black and white early version. when i saw what her message version
could do, the first thing i set it up to say, in foggy screen, was 'you
touch this and you're a dead man!'
the machines are in my son's room, and he can be a total ditz if left to
his own --or someone else's-- devices.

so- school me on what to expect and what to guard against, once i start
trying out unkown floppies of dubious origin.
