Now to the trouble:
slid over to the IIfx.
OS 7.5.5
RAM doubler installed.
started out with keyboard and mouse. waited for bootup. all was well.
inserted trackpad floppie as before. icon appeared on the desktop, as
before.
look around for the system folder.
hm. don't know where it is. look thru some indices, finally ask the
finder to take me to it.
locate it, click on it, bring it out as open file. here i could smack
myself in retrospect. I had the general controls set to forbid monkeying
with either system or applications. I shoulda obeyed myself. I had
locked them for a good reason.
but nooo. I went back and unlocked the system folder from general
controls.
closed gen con, back to system folder.
as per directions on the floppie, I dragged and dropped the Icon for the
trackpad software over into the system folder. not icon onto icon.
icon into open folder.
not as neat an operation as pulling out the system folder on the IIsi,
making an alias of it, then putting away [ command+y] the actual folder
and leaving the alias on IIsi desktop--
but it seemed to suffice. the software SEEMED to install into the system
folder.
or did it?. read on:
i beleive at this point,
I closed the system folder, then went to the alias i had made for the
trackpad controls, opened it, and tried the README file. (the one that
could not be found on the IIsi)
and presto, here on the IIfx, the README file appears and I read it! OK.
warns me about conflicts with the mouse and keyboard. tells me to remove
the control panels for those if I have problems getting the trackpad to
operate.
ok, Ill keep that in mind, but where am I supposed to remove them TO?
then I move to the trackpad controls panels , expecting to configure
them just like I had on the IIsi.
weirdness. now the system cannot sense the trackpad connected to it.
tells me to restart the computer.
well, ok. i can do that.
close window, back up, close window, give shutdown sequence. computer
IIfx turns off.
double check trackpad plug seating at ADB port. try removing it to its
own port out the back, since i do have 2 to work with on this model.
turn on power at back of machine.
get hit with the 'this machine was improperly shut down last time'
warning.
as screen comes up.
OK. hit return.
boot up proceeds.all is ok.
machine wants the floppie put back in. OK. slip it back in. icon
reappears. i hear it reading.
i click on icon to open it. once again go to its control panel to
reconfigure the track buttons my way.. once again, the machine says it
cannot sense the trackpad connected, that it must be in mouse emulation
mode.. and this time, it's plugged into its own ADB port out the back of
the machine, not to the keyboard.
and it's tracking and clicking.
hm.
but it is tracking and it is clicking and it is dragging and dropping.
so i hit OK and go on.
it says to restart it again. OK. I use the restart command. everything
repeats again. boots, icon shows, same inability to sense the trackpad.
hm.
decide to go into the controls and see if slowing down the keyboard and
mouse controls, like I did on the IIsi, helps any. this might be the
conflict the README warned me about.
while i am in there changing the mouse and KB settings to slower ones, I
am thinking about the README advisory. and i think "if I am supposed to
remove the mouse controls from the folder, where am i supposed to remove
them TO???"
I do what I can about lowering the speeds of the mouse and keyboards
controls, close up and back out. do not know how to remove them to avoid
conflicts.
the trackpad is tracking, it's clicking, it's dragging and dropping. I
think I'm done.
I think about the system folder, and how i found it on the IIsi and
wanted to make an alias of it, so I can keep one on the desktop, handy
for future installations done much like this one today: drag and drop on
the desktop.
seems like a good idea.
it worked on that one.
I think I would like to do that on this IIfx also. save myself the step
of going looking for the system folder and having to bring it out, every
time I install something in the future.
so I go and get the system folder once again. bring the folder out on
the desktop.
PAY ATTENTION HERE, FRIENDS. I THINK THIS IS WHERE I WENT WRONG
thinking i can do what i did on the IIsi, I click on the icon of the
system folder once. it darkens. i go to the file menu and click on 'make
alias'.
an alias folder of the system folder appears in front of the real system
folder.
<V><V><V><V>V><V>
I try to separate them as i did on the IIsi desktop, intending to put
the real folder away and keep the alias icon out on my desktop.
NO GO.
ILLEGAL OPERATION.
I GET A BOMB AND NOTHING MOVES WHATSOEVER. NO CURSOR, NADA. THE BOX SAYS
RESTART.
great. the onlly way i can do that is to 'improperly shutdown' by using
the power button at the back of the console. no keyboard commands work,
no mouse moves, nuttin.
OK. you *asked* me to---!
poweroff.
and power back on,
and get the "improper shutdown' screen again, and i say OK,
and it reboots allright, all extensions, all the desktop icons as last
time--
AND THERE IS THE SYSTEM FOLDER AND ITS ALIAS, FROZEN TOGETHER LIKE
SIAMESE TWINS, RIGHT WHERE I TRIED TO SEPARATE THEM LAST TIME.
AND ANOTHER ATEMPT TO MOVE IT GIVES ME YET ANOTHER ILLEGAL OPERATION
FLASH, AND ANOTHER BOMB, AND ANOTHER FROZEN SCREEN. I think: is there a
command i can give with the keys? cmd+Q? cmd+Y? should i try to drag the
alias over to the trash? how can I undo this jam?
and that is when i turned it off [improperly again] and came in here to
consult with all of you.
what did i do, when did i do it, and how do I undo it, before i do even
more damage?????
[sniff sniff--I'm so emotional now! I'm really a true member! I've lost
my virginity. I'm having my first crash. snif. is'nt it beautiful?...]
I know when i boot up, it's gonna keep taking me right back to the
siamese twin scenario, with the system folder and its alias image, stuck
right there on the desktop. what is it waiting for me to do--or undo- to
free it from this untenable situation?
did i screw up installing the software to the trackpad? where and how?
why can i make an alias of the system folder on the IIsi, but when i go
to do it on here, this happens?
if the fact that RAM doubler is active on this machine makes a
difference., what do i do to take that out of the mix, before i try to
undo what i did to the system folder and its alias? and CAN I, given
that the system folder is locked in with its alias?
can I reboot with a key command to break this logjam? can I disable ram
doubler from this position?
and truth is, I don't need this trackpad to be installed on this IIFx,
all things being equal. I can use my mouse on this one and let the IIsi
have the trackpad, since it installed fine over there and I have mice
for the other 2 machines. can I get my mistake unjammed and deinstall
the trackpad driver without screwing up my system folder? is there a way
to tell if i DID get the driver installed in the first place?
OK. there's my Kluge.
help??
try to be gentle. it's my first time, guys.
