OK, here's my idea.

Darwin, the BSD-derived core of OS X, already runs on x86.

Instead of the troublesome window server/window manager combination of
Quartz (Window Server) and Aqua (Window Manager), Xfree86 and KDE could be
used. This is already available to FreeBSD, another descendent of the BSD
line. For those who prefer GNOME, substitute GNOME for KDE.

It would not be OS X as we know it, but it will be close. What would remain
to do would be to recompile Apple programs like iMovie, iDVD. AppleWorks
and so on for this bastard son of OS X.

Basically this would be comparable to a micro-kernel version of
FreeBSD...like Linux, FreeBSD is a monolithic kernel which packs everything
into its core. If you want a literate and easy-to-follow explanation of the
difference between a micro-kernel OS and a monolithic kernel, read Linus
Torvalds' "as told to" autobiography "Just For Fun."

A sorta, kinda OS X for x86? No sweat! Apple could do this in its sleep.
