I know this is a Powerbook-related issue, but I'm not getting any response on that list and it's driving me nah-nahs...
I've just purchased a 540c which has password protection on the hard disk... the owner doesn't have the password as it was purchased at a business clearing sale or something and never used. I was told that formatting the hard disk would get around the issue, which made perfect sense to me. Except Apple SC Disk setup can't see unmounted volumes... but that's the least of my problems at the moment. It's being very picky about what boot disks it'll, er, boot. I've just about exhausted the entire collection of disk images at Gamba's site, but the one I really want, the Network Boot Disk that will allow to use all the utilities and MacOS8 CD on my 8500 won't let me use the Chooser! It says that the disk is locked, and indeed the System Briefcase is (incidently, the actual disk itself isn't write protected). Unlocking it on another Mac usually results in a boot up error or bomb. Booting up without extensions lets the Chooser load (and display other Macs on the network) but of course it can't connect cuz the AppleShare extension isn't loaded. I have an external CD drive but can't boot up from that; I only have one terminator at the moment and as the 540c doesn't provide termination power at the "other end" it doesn't work. I don't have proper SCSI disk mode cable and it will be a few days before I can get into my local Mac supplier to buy anything like that. And because it's a 2.5" notebook drive with weirdo connectors I just can't plop the drive into an external drive bay and fix it up on another mac like I've done before. Does anyone have a custom or working Network Boot Disk image they could email me, or have some kind of cure for this ailment? It's driving me nuts, especially cuz I have a sweet little machine that I got for a great price and I can't play with it! Cheers, Ben. -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
