You shouldn't need any software to mount an external. It's a pure hardware situation. What I know about netBSD ranks on my list with Sumerian fashion but let's get the underlying Mac problems solved first. Then you can get to netBSD however you want. There's a Mac utility -- actually several -- that will mount pesky drives. SCSI Probe is one and Mt. Everything is another. Try and use one of them to "see" the external. Let me know what you get.
