Sure. First, grab the System 7.1 (Or 7 Pro, or 7.1.2, whatever you can
get ahold of. Check http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2 ) disks. Also,
check the Enabler matrix (Also on Gamba's site) and see if you need one
for a Q700. I'd bet you do. Grab and unstuff that. Then, mount all the
System 7.1 Disks with a copy of Disk Copy. Or, if you want, you can make
real floppies, but there's not much point.

Anyway, once you have all the disk images mounted, drag your System 8
Finder to the desktop or main HD or just somewhere else. This will
unbless your System Folder. Rename your System Folder to Previous System
Folder or some such thing. Make a new folder called System Folder and
put your Enabler in there. Last, but not least, run the main System 7.1
installer. Once that's done, double check that your Enabler is in place,
cross your fingers, and reboot ;)

Should be all there is to it. System 7.1 doesn't have the handy "Clean
Install" option like some of the later ones did. You'll want to grab any
third-party extensions and control panels, as well as a few System ones.
The main ones you'll want are the Apple Menu Items, PC Exchange, and the
Find File stuff (It might complain, but it'll work. You may need the
Find File from 7.5 or thereabouts if you want the fancy find stuff). If
you use/like it, you'll also want to grab the Control Strip stuff (I
do). You may also want the Appearance Extension and Control Panel (Gives
7.1 the 8.1 look, but grab the Dragging and Thread Managers from Gamba's
site first), as well as the Charcoal and other fonts. Before tossing the
old System Folder, make sure there are no application-specific folders
left. Claris is a good example, as is Microsoft stuff. Alternatively,
you can keep the 8 System Folder intact and just swap the Finders in and
out, giving you a dual-boot system. There are programs to automate this,
System Picker is one I think. I generally just do it manually myself.

Enjoy!

Subject: Best Quadra system

I just bought a Quadra 700, with 24 meg. It has system 8 on it. I
would like to go back to system 7.1. Can I do that without having to
strip the disk and start over? dh
