Far as I know they'll only do what they can do.  The latest drivers 
are the latest drivers.  You're right about the 20/20; it's 
impossible to design software for hardware that's not even on the 
drawing board.  Free support forever is not likely to happen.  A 
company can divert only so much money and manpower at the front end 
or the back end to produce a free item and still remain competitive 
with their current products.

If they allow anyone to change their drivers then they get blamed 
when someone passes along an altered driver that destroy another 
persons hardware.  In general, that just makes support headaches for 
the manufacturer.
