For creating graphics modes, a driver which queries the monitor and
uses the information properly should work with any monitor cabable of
handling what the graphics card can handle.

I suspect they were set up for specific monitors and don't actually use
the information like a modern driver does.

If they had done the driver properly, it should not care how new a monitor
is, since the math for calculating a graphics mode has not changed.

If they had created the ability to enter timing information manually,
that would be even better.

Then no one would have to divert money and manpower at all.

Nah, too many drivers do this for me to believe it's a valid excuse.

In the UNIX world, you had to create timing manually for many years.
But, that was mostly because no one had bothered to write software
to create the timings.

There are a number of utility programs to create graphics mode timing
when given a few simple parameters about your monitor and graphics card.

All we need is a way to get that information into the drivers.
