If you drag one hard drive onto another, you will get a folder on the target drive with the entire contents of the source drive. Another way is to open the source drive, select all, and drag to the target drive. This will not get any files on the desktop. To make sure the target drive is bootable, simply open and close the target system folder after the copy is complete. Aliases to any third drive (neither source nor destination) will transfer just fine. Here is a manual way to make aliases from the source drive to itself work as aliases from the target drive to itself after the transfer: 1. If the name of the source drive has ever changed, find every alias on the source drive and do a get-info/find-original on each one. (on newer systems, just command-R). The Find File command has an easy option to find aliases. Note the name of the source drive. 2. Perform the copy by dragging contents of source drive to target drive. Make sure the target drive is bootable, and as a last step before shutting down, give the target drive the exact same name as the source drive. 3. Boot the target drive, either with the source drive disconnected or dismount the source drive by dragging it to the trash. 4. At this point your aliases will work because the path names are the same, but if you want to be able to rename the drive or move or rename any files, find every alias again and do the get-info/find-original on the target drive. Why this works: An alias has 2 parts: the file number/volume id of the target, and the full path name of the target. If either is out of date, get-info/find-original finds the file by the other means and repairs the broken one. By keeping the path names the same, you allow the finder to repair the changes to file number/volume id caused by copying to another drive.
