Possible unstable RAM chip, maybe...?

I don't know about anyone else, but I read this as two separate problems
1. My CD install for 4.2.1 Pro returns an Error 1.
2. I tried increasing the installer memory but it is grayed out.

I answered problem No. 1 Not problem No. 2 And, it would be a given,
that if problem No. 2 had not existed, problem No. 1 possibly could have
been corrected.

This is what I base my answer on:

Type 1 error (Bus Error)

One of the most common indications of a memory-related error. It means
that you tried to access an non-existent/inaccessible memory address.

And this could be caused by several different things.
  Extention/init conflict
Not enough memory allocated to the application
  A possible bad memory module
An Application trying to write to an invalid or unavailable address
  etc., etc., etc.......
