Not all Apple Ethernet NB cards need it, only those with an on board
68000 processor.

The only example I know of a card that used A/ROSE that wasn't from
Apple was an equipment controller card I saw demoed at MacWorld one
year. It was controlling an LGB model train, both engines and
turnouts. As part of the demo they would quit the front end
application or switch to other, processor intensive programs and show
that it didn't effect the train operations.
