Yes. (For the purpose of any you'll use in that Mac.) But there are a few differences that crop up. The original was IDE for Integrated Drive Electronics (sometimes called Intelligent). It put a controller customized for each drive on the drive and simplified the interface to the computer. The original IDE had some limitations on the maximum size of drive and there was also an offshoot with special 8 bit interface boards for the IBM PC/PC-XT. (That quickly died out as companies made standard boards for them.) Then along came the CD-ROM drive with it's 650 meg capacity which exceeded the maximum size for the original IDE. Sony, Panasonic and Mitsumi all made proprietary interfaces based on IDE or SCSI to fix that because SCSI was more expensive to use. The ultimate fix was the ATA standard or AT Attachment as an extention to IDE. That allowed for hard drives over 512 megs. A further extention called ATAPI or ATA Packet Interface integrated support for devices other than hard drives and CD-ROMs. Most "IDE" drives these days are actually ATAPI but retain much backward compatability with IDE provided the computer they are connected to can properly address the full size and/or all functions of the device. I have a LaCie external USB 1.1 case that used to have an ATAPI CD-RW in it. It also works for hard drives but not if they're regular IDE, which means it won't work with hard drives under 1 gig. I don't have a drive bigger than 512 but less than 1.2 gig to test, but it doesn't work with the two I have under 512meg that I know are good. Only surprised me a little since the box was designed for a CD-RW drive which if it's "IDE" is actually ATAPI. ===== "Why do Zik-Zak Burgers come in plastic packs?
