Hi everyone, and sorry if this is a waste of time:
If playing with LCIIIs is a waste of time I might as well own up to having wasted 3 years doing it ;)
a) I want to run a CD drive off my old LCIII
Very possible.
b) I have an old drive from a 7100
What happened to the 7100? Did you get fed up of it biting you hands and have it put down? :D
c) I dont want to put this drive in an external case with an external PS
Why not? You could plug it into any Mac anywhere and the cases can be found on e-bay for very little $$ these days. My external CD drive is one of my most valuable tools.
d) can I rig up some kind of wiring to get the SCSI signal after the internal HD and the required power from the PS of the LC?
Sure, you need a hard disk power cable splitter and a Male to Female extension for same (both should be available from most good PC component suppliers) and a longer SCSI ribbon with 3 connectors on, preferably 2 about 3" apart at one end then a huge length then on at the other end. Replace the SCSI ribbon (plugs in right behind the HDD) with the longer one and then lead that out of the case. Split the power cable from the hard disk and replug one line into the hard disk. Extend the other line out of the case. Set the SCSI ID on the CD drive to '3' (standard on all Macs with internal SCSI CD drives) then attache the cables. Hey pretso.
Two things you should be aware of:
1. Don't forget to add the Apple CD-ROM driver for your chosen Mac OS to System Folder:Extensions
2. The LC PSU is only 35W and very weedy so it might not like having 2 drives hung off it. CD drives don't draw as much power as Hard Drives but it's still worth he warning.
