I dunno what "AMU" stands for, but some Mac II systems
shipped with that in place of the "PMMU" chip which
is the Paged Memory Management Unit, without which
you can't have virtual memory. The PMMU function was
integrated into the 68030 CPU. Daystar's upgrades
for the Mac II plugged into the 68020 and the PMMU
sockets, thus they do not require the control panel
unless you want to enable the "Power Math" SANE call
redirection functionality. (But for Macs where the
original CPU remains in place, the control panel
is required to enable the new CPU.)
