the problem is that the mac needs to boot on a non raid drive, it simply can not boot from a raid array, you need one drive that is not part of a raid array to boot and then you can have your applications and data on the raid drives but unfortunately not the os (i'm not sure about the vm, you may be able to have it on the raid array which would certainly be preferable). it's a limitation of the mac os, it's not designed to handle raid for booting but fortunately can handle it after booting. in any case, a drive that was part of a raid array will definitely need to be reformated/partitioned in order to work as a non raid drive.
