One of those code cracking projects has a PowerMac
client that will run on a 601 60/66 which will just
barely process a block of keys in the required time
on a 60Mhz and a squeak less time on the 66Mhz.
Look up Team 6100. Some folks have big racks of
6100 pizza boxes doing nothing but running that code
cracking program. There's a bit of rivalry there with
the similarly "powerful" Pentium 60/66. ;) Those
run through the blocks about the same speed as the
601.

As for 68k CPUs, distributed tasks would require
special programming and the task would have to be
able to be split into little chunks to allow them
to be processed in a decent amount of time.

That's not to say a 68k can't participate in a big
project. The 3D computer graphics film "Planetary
Traveller" was spread across several "render farms",
some of which used 68040 Macs like Quadra 840AVs.
The software used was the then in development
Bryce 3D. The movie served as an excellent stress
and beta test for the software.
