Many old systems were limited to 2 GB partitions, particularly for the boot partition. I suggest making the boot partition somewhat less than 2 GB and placing it at the start of the drive (just to be sure it doesn't go over the boundary, since the driver partitions use several kB as well). Also, unless you are dealing with a few large files, the smaller the partition the better. For HFS, the cluster size becomes quite large on 1 GB and larger partitions.
