Can anyone tell me if this is normal on a machine with a dead battery?

Not on all macs, but certainly on the 660av I have with the same problem. Pop a new battery in and all should work well :).

(6100s and Q605/LC475s also act the same way, among others)

I believe he Q610 does it as well. I have had a 660av that did that and now have a 6100 PowerMac that does just the same. I believe all those models mentioned are based on the same architecture. Crazy piece of design, but hey ;)
