If you are set on upgrading the IIsi, then I suggest you look for Daystar's right-angle adapter for the IIsi.
Sounds good. I'll have to check the prices; the Sonnet Presto 040 is running between $10 and $20 on eBay, but it requires an adapter for the IIsi which would cost another $30 new. If this price is right, the DayStar/PDS Ethernet seems to be what I'm looking for.
There are no real down sides to clock chipping the IIsi to 25 or even 27 MHz. The chip set on the board is the same as on the IIci. You will not be overstressing it to run it at the speed at which it was designed to work. If you remove the original oscillator, as opposed to using some kind of clip, then the downside is the potential for damaging your logic board in the process of desoldering the oscillator. If you do remove the oscillator, install a socket, so that you can easily test the 50 and 55 MHz (IIsi runs at half the speed of the oscillator) oscillators without further soldering (other than the socket).
What exactly do you mean by a clip? I've never soldered before, and if I ended up doing it, I would have somebody experienced do it for me, but if it could be avoided, that would be great. My biggest concern was that I heard a heat sink is required if you chip a IIsi, even to 25MHz. Is this true?
However, upgrading a IIsi is sort of like beating yourself with a hammer. Unless you're dead set on that machine for reasons not subject to logical debate, I suggest you get a IIci.
Actually, I had the choice to buy a 5/40 IIsi or a IIci without a hard drive for $10, and I picked the IIsi because I didn't have any hard drives. I ended up replacing the hard drive in the IIsi anyway because somebody gave me one though. Still, I would rather not replace the IIsi because the only expansion card I need is ethernet, and it is smaller, which helps because it barely fits where I keep it. If I can chip it to 25MHz or get the DayStar, it would be the same as a IIci anyway.
Thanks for your help!
