I'll wake this thread back up ...
Steve, thanks for the coolerguys.com tip. I picked up some cooling accessories for some other Macs I'm working on. I ordered from their close-out shop coolergarage.com. I also splurged on blue LEDs. My G3 and 7600 now look pretty wicked. :-)
Back to the LC 475... I am going to use one of these things for home automation and want to spin-down the HD and run all my software out of a RAM disk. I have the option of using 7.5.X - 8.1 for an OS. RAM is maxed at 36MB. Any advice on a HD spin-down control or power management option. I also plan to replace the stock 60mm fan with a thermostatically controlled model to keep the noise down, too. Also, remounting the motherboard is not really an option as it is counter to keeping the size of the unit small ... the reason I chose my LC 475 for this task.
Thanks! -- Brandon

Also, it's a "PC" shop, but coolerguys.com might have some parts you can
swap out to make cooling easier. Things like rolled-up ribbon cables,
ultra-quiet fans of all sizes, etc.
This reminds me of something. I once took one of my Apple IIGS machines
(had a hot accellerator, hot SCSI drive, every slot filled) and put it
inside a PC tower case. I mounted the motherboard vertically. The tower
case had fans galore and plenty of room for more, plus I got the main
computer off my desk. You might want to think about that too.

Hello!
I am setting up an LC 475 as a small server. So far, I have replaced the CPU (68LC40 > "full" 68040) and will probably put a larger 7200rpm hard drive in it.
Watch the power supply - more aged units sometimes don't give out the right voltage (should be +12V, +5V and -5V) and will result in newer, faster drives refusuing to start.
Will the machine run with "passive cooling" (fan disconnected)? I thought of removing the top of the case. According to specs, the unit only draws 30 - 35 watts... Or will I still run into heat problems?
The heat generated by a 25MHz 040 is enough to make you smart if you
catch your finger on it while it's running without as heatsink. The
hard drive will also get very hot. With the lid removed you will gain a
bit of heat dissapation. My advice (and I have done this myself - I
used to have a similar setup in a filing sized deep desk drawer) is
that you should fan ventilate it somehow, oir fit a large passive
heatsink on the 040(something about the size used to cool Pentuium 150
CPUs is about right, with the fan removed) and do not cover the hard
disk. Should suffice.
