The 720 supports up to 1280 x 1024, but the built-in video of the Quadra 840AV maxes out at 1152 x 780. The 720 is not an AppleVision so it should not need the ADB cable plugged in. I suspect you are missing some System software -- do you have Quadra Monitors Extension and Quadra AV Monitors Extension?
