Just to let everyone know that I have handed in my papers and an standing down as the list Nanny for Vintage Macs. It's been so quiet here recently I don't think it needs a full-time dedicated Nanny (sadly), also i have had a shift in priorities and no longer have the time to admin for the LEM lists.Gee, I just got here. Hope there are still macaholics out there to talk to. Am currently trying to make the IIci talk nice to the others on the LAN, 2 win98se, 1 XP, 1 ME, 1 gentoo linux. I just put 128 mb RAM into it, and moved it up to System 7.5.3. Netscape 3.04/iCab 2.9.8(pre), now work smoothly with the Asante nic.
I'll still be around if anyone needs me for Mac related stuff but I'm afraid I will no longer be able to handle anything admin related.
Now, there is much need for hard drive space, in order to accommodate MPW 3.5. I have part of it working, the shell, but no room for the library/interfaces, though I've stripped most stuff off the hard drive. Am reluctant to delete the 7.5.3 system install folder until I'm totally sure I won't still need to redo it. Am amazed at the heavy storage difference between 6.08 and 7.5.3. And that move forced upgrading other programs, also much larger than their 6.08 counterparts.
I have been reading all I can find on SCSI drives, that OS 7.5.3 can't do more than 4 gb on the drive. So am thinking to get a Seagate Baracuda, about 9-17 gb, part for linux, the rest in 4 gig parts for mac. But, uncertain about the size limits. 68ks also include powermacs, so not sure if it is a 2gb limit, or 4gb. Speed dropped down after 7.5.3, so don't want that to get any worse.
There is room for another cache card, I see. I'd like to know if a larger scsi drive is possible by careful partitioning. And if 7.5.3 can handle it. Open Transport version is apparently a factor, limited by the system version. Also, I am still not clear on just exactly what is required to convert from 25pin scsi to 50pin or 68 pin, and how to get it functional. I see $$ tied up in those little biddy converter/terminators.
I'd appreciate any additional info people may have on this..
The only other problem I've had is in downloading .hqx files, getting them properly converted. I've had the best luck only by using TransMac and StuffitExpander.exe on XP box to d/l, expand and re-stuff onto floppy, to finally get a .sit on floppy that will be recognized as a .sit on the mac.
Altogether, am thrilled that 7.5.3 makes mac look so good.
Cheers, and thanks for any responders,
Pat Day
