For $99.95 you could buy a two or three old Macs
with 68040 CPUs and built in ethernet, like Quadra
700's or even 900/950's etc. If you can pick up
a Presto Plus used and DIRT CHEAP, go for it.

If you're wanting to do quite a bit of web browsing,
the performance* of a 68k Mac leaves quite a bit to
be desired, mainly because there aren't any web
browsers that're really optimized for them and most
of the browsers are older versions that can't handle
newer additions to HTML and multimedia plugins.

For e-mail and surfing with images turned off they
do OK.

*The 68030 is contemporary with and performs roughly
equivalent to a 80386 and a 68040 matches pretty
well with a 80486. I've used the internet on computers
with all of those CPU types and it was an excercise
in being patient on all of them. ;) The intel world
doesn't have a desktop CPU equivalent to the 68020
or 68000. When those were new, intel was still
mucking about with the 16bit 80286 and just starting
with the early (and slowwww versions of) 80386.

I'd love to have the $ now that an original Mac cost
in 1984. Even better would be the ~$5,000 a new IBM
AT cost in 1984. I could hardly spend all that on a
new computer now without having some left over. ;)
(Though a dual G5 with Cinema Display could take it
all...)
