I guess I'm going to continue using the 2-step boot: that SE/30 is the
oldest (and the only SE) computer I own and I'm not going to take the risk
of a board-washing.

Another thing: that computer has recently become mute, although I can hear
the sounds if I put my ear next to the speaker. Probably a cable problem?

Thanks

It is actually fairly common with this model, due to aged capacitors that
either aren't doing their job or even leaking onto the logic board and
causing shorts. It can also occur from bad contacts to the RAM or ROM
simms, but the 2-step boot usually won't solve that problem.

You can continue to do the 2-step boot; I have 2 SE/30's in this state.
If it reaches the point where you can't boot it at all, I suggest
removing the simms and battery, then running the logic board through a
dishwasher wash cycle (not the heated dry), and let it air-dry a couple
of days. I've fixed about 4 SE/30's this way, although usually the sound
stops working. The dishwasher cleans off the hard-to-see residue from the
caps, but some of the caps need to work for the sound to be audible.
Finally you can replace the caps for a long-term fix.

A bad battery or even no battery at all will NOT interfere with the
SE/30's ability to boot. The models that need the 2-step boot to overcome
a bad or missing battery include the Quadra 605, LC 475, and 6100 series;
these show no video before cycling power (not strips, checkerboards, or
simsai patterns).
