You can buy a Mac Plus, which can run System 7.5.3, which Apple has made available for free, for less than the cost of shipping it. I have no clue as to why they've clamped down on people trading copies of System 1 or System 3 or whatever, but whatever it is, this isn't likely to be it.

I vote for sheer cussedness and the fact that it isn't *their idea*.

It probably isn't legal for them to interfere in the free distribution of software that they originally released to be freely handed out among Mac users (and prior to System 7.1 all Mac operating systems were released without charge to be distributed at will to other Mac users). Barn doors and escaped horses and all that. Not that the owner of some website with a squiggle in it is going to want to take on Apple's attorneys to establish that n court, mind you.

If you really want to have a spot of fun, try getting your hands on the AppleShare File Server application for System 6.

could it possibly be that if people are content with the preformance of an
older computer that they can buy for next to nothing and systems that they
can download for free, they won't shell out the money of the new ones?
Apple makes no money off of computers sold second, third, fourth hand nor
off of free downloadable obsolete software.
math: 1 person x profit from new computer + profit from systems and
software = money
            10 people x profit from new computer + profit from systems and
software = 10 x money
          100 people x profit from new computer + profit from systems and
software = 100 x money
        1000 people x profit from new computer + profit from systems and
software = 1000 x money

when the obsolete creates competition for the new, make the obsolete as
inaccessible and un useable as posssible to increase the demand for the new
that is for sale and profit
