The simplification of model names was an overreaction to the confusing abundance of models and numbers in the pre-iMac era. Of especial annoyance was applying different model numbers to hardware-identical Macs that came with different software packages. (Many PC companies still do this. %#%^#^% Hewlett Packard!) So Apple went to the other extreme. "Here's the new G3!" *some months later* "Here's the new G3!" "Hey! I thought that one was the G3?" "Ummm. This one's a tower, that's a desktop. And this one's 33Mhz faster." "Oh. Thanks for 'clearing that up'." *some months later* "Here's the new G3!" "What? Again?" "This one has a Blue and White case! 'Plus', we've eliminated the ADB port!" *some months later* "Here's the new G3!" "AAAAAAHHHHHH!" "We changed the case color, but not the shape, and the motherboard's different."
