Video editing and multimedia production. Those chew
up gigs and gigs with uncompressed video and
audio data. That used to be the nearly exclusive
domain of the Macintosh, just below the proprietary
commercial A/V systems. The 9500/9600 was a godsend
to the A/V industry because it could be stuffed
full of specialized hardware. Then Apple gave the
finger to that market segment with the Beige G3 having
only three slots. Quite useless for many editing
systems that had at least four PCI cards for doing
various things to video and audio. Check out what
some of the Digidesign audio systems had in a 9600. :)

Just prior to the release of the slot-impaired G3,
Apple was >thisclose< to producing the most
mega-expandable, goodie loaded Macintosh ever.
Codenamed "Power Express". It got as far as the
engineering sample stage, which for Apple hardware
was usually identical to the production model.
A Power Express turns up on eBay now and then, they
always go for high prices.

It will be total Fandemonium!
