i dunno if its possible to set it to spin down but on a webserver you
dont want it to...
if the machine is on it needs to be instantly ready to be accessed...
if you have vram on and can get away with turning it off do so... also
increase your disk cache as big as you can get it without messing
something up (both of those will reduce thrashing but with 4mb of ram
i dunno how far those methods can be stretched... never used macos in
4mb)

as far as the noise itself goes i cant help you there... ive gotten
used to the sound of 'crunching' drives... but since its external you
may be able to sit it behind the desk or put it in a drawer... may
also be possible to hush it up by sitting something rather heavy on it
(be carefull not to damage it in your efforts to quiet it down)

its a bug in the server... IE is more than likely correcting for it...
the raw header from the server says 105... i doubt it can/will be
fixed... it shouldnt cause any problems... your log files will just
look weird...

here is the raw header reply;

you can do that yourself with any telnet client just hit enter twice
after typing;
HEAD / HTTP/1.0 (i think its case sensitive i dunno) works with any
web server just make sure you specify the port to the telnet client or
it will default to 23...

ive never even seen a mac 512 (other than pictures) let alone tinkered
with one... never messed around with any system version older than 7.1
either (and if possible i upgrade to 7.5) ive also never messed with
any server software on the mac... any mac... i dont even have any macs
in use anymore... so i cant help you there... sorry :/

but i do know that when it comes to webservers (or any kind of server)
you want as much ram as possible (i doubt 2mb will cut it unless you
trim to os down to nearly nothing) and to avoid the use of vram/swap
like the plague...

an example would be the server thats linked in my .sig .... its a
60mhz 1st generation pentium system with 103mb of ram and swap
disabled.. this configuration (linux) can handle roughly 120 requests
per second over a 10base2 connection... back when it had only 32mb of
ram and swap turned on it couldnt get anywhere near that... (ps the
page still says it only has 32mb of ram and other hardware thats no
longer present... i need to update that 'site' in a really bad way...)
note: its not online between noon and 9 CST (i dont have dsl or cable
and the modems wall wart is plugged into a lamp timer so that the
other folk that live here can use the phone too ;) )

ok... im way overtired and am just rambling now... gnite...
