supported by a bit of wood on the side the spiral tended to move the
aluminum...

I don't know the original caulk, but Vulkem is the magic material most
recommend for all Airstream caulking. Its on the shelf at Lowes, likely
other big home centers. About $4.50 per tube. It claims 50 year life.
