I wanted to let everyone know what Chuck's vapor locking problem most
probably is. Back in 2004 I thought I 'd be smart and put a new fuel pump
on my bug before I headed out to Spokane, WA from Beatrice, NE. Now this
3000 mile run was plagued with vapor locking issues and for quite a few
months afterward. I could hit and maintain 60mph and no more.

After discussing the problem with Phil Cram at Cram Foreign auto in Omaha,
he knew exactly what the issue was. The fuel pumps that Napa sells are
junk. They allow the heat from the engine to be in contact with the fuel
and thus vapor locking ensues. I asked Chuck for a photo of his pump, and
most assuredly this is what the problem is. If you run a mechanical fuel
pump, just get it overwith and done right and use a brosol or oem style
pump. Make sure that you pay attention to whether you need a fuel pump for
an alternator or generator-equipped engine.

Now I'm fully aware that some of you have probably run these NAPA style
pumps and been getting away with it for years. I'm happy for ya. I'm sure
there will be a long list of folks who have skillions of other fixes to
level on your engine such as pounds of tin foil, bags of ice, different
carburetors, and the list goes on and on. I would assume that most of you
would like to just fix the problem and be on your way.

Here is a good style fuel pump:

I wish I could get my server to work so I could upload Chuck's photo but
perhaps upon request, he or I could send the photo to help you identify what
the bad pumps look like.
