Glenn,
Just answered James post with thoughts similar to what I want to share
with you and the rest of the listees.
About VWs disappearing from the US, well you guys are not alone. So many
vintage VWs are ebing scrapped locally here in Pakistan it makes me want to
cry. The car market dynamics changed tremendously over the last few years as
import of used cars was allowed and leasing companies/banks offer people
cars on easy installments. So even the proverbial village idiot who once
could not afford a motorbike is puttering around town in a Toyota!
Given this dangerous trend Vws are left high and dry. So many abandoned
bugs are junked. A very disturbing fact is that now even normal scrap
merchants who used to deal with scrap collected from households (we have
local people who buy scrap metal, old cans, bottles and newspapers from your
doorstep) have started to hack up old cars too.
Just last week I was on the trail of a one owner 1965 Left hand drive bug
which had been sold to such a scrap merchant. Unfortunately despite my best
efforts I only managed to catch up once the car was in pieces.....rather
mangled pieces of metal......and all these were buried in a 12 foot high
pile of mangled rusted metal. I could not salvage a single nut as it was so
mixed up with junk and the shop man refused to take anything out of the
pile. he promised that when the truck would come to collect the lot he'll
call. As expected the trucker was in a hurry and I never got a call.
What was the real insult in this drama was the fact that hard to find
parts like the nice slopping headlight pair were thrown in the GARBAGE pile.
Even the engine with a 'GB' series casing was hammered into small pieces.
Makes me a much sadder man.
