I just finished bleeding the brakes in a '71 Ghia and the procedure
is the same on my bugs. I bought a power bleeder that consists of a
plastic bottle, a hose that connects to the valve on the spare tire,
and a hose/cap that screws onto the fluid reservoir. One fills the
bottle with fluid, inflates the tire to about 15 pounds to apply
pressure on the reservoir, and opens the valve at each of the wheel
cylinders to bleed off air bubbles and fluid until no bubbles flow.
If one lacks this kit, it takes two people - one pumping the brake
pedal, the other opening each valve.
On my ACVWs, the play in the pedal is about an inch. This is
determined by how closely one adjusted the brake pads at the wheels.
I hope this helps.
