I'm in the middle of replacing the pan under my '70 Bug because of extensive rust in the frame head.
I got a very good deal on a '69 rolling pan with the front beam and transaxle with only some metal replacement required in the battery tray area. The beam has no rust on the bottom of the shock towers and appears in good shape so I'm going to use it for now. The ball joint boots were split and cracked but the joints appeared to be in good shape. Looking through the CP1 catalog I found a ball joint boot replacement kit and decided to try this route. Replacement of the ball joints on my last beam ended with me buying a new disc brake beam because of the high price to have the new ball joints pressed in; nearly $70 per joint if I supplied the joint and removed the arm from the car. The installation was pretty straight forward using a pickle fork to remove the joint from the steering knuckle, removing remnants of old boot, flushing old grease and any contaminants with new grease, installing the new boot and reassembly. Anyone else done this? Just a temporary fix?
