Id second Bill May on this,
 
    I dont see any reason or logic why old ball joints cannot or should not be 
given protection again by replacing a cracked/damaged boot. As long as the old 
grease is cleaned out (maybe by using a solvent or WD40) and fresh 
grease/teflon is used it should be a good fix.
