Hi, Brian,

Nick Stokes said it right: there are pros and cons to either side, and
since it was Dealer's Choice, both are found on USA beetles.

In Germany, the word was always to put the antenna on the left side -- not
due to "playing children" exactly, but more due to juvenile delinquents who
enjoyed popping off the antennas. Note that most German antennas were
cowl-mounted on the VW, not mounted on the sides.

I had a Blaupunkt radio on a 1961 beetle that I watched the dealer in Mainz
install. The shop had a little chassis punch -- a lot like a Greenlee punch
-- that located and punched a perfect oval hole in the left cowl, right
where the factory later put pre-cut holes. The Poddig antenna popped in as
a perfect fit.
