Obviously it depends on which eads and rocker shaft studs are used. .006" is correct for late models, not all models. Larger exhaust clearances help prevent burned valves, but are noisier and may reduce performance a bit. It's a trade-off there. .008" should be fine for both.

A quick basic question: What valve clearance values must be set on a 1961-2 vintage 1200cc 40 horser??? Engine has different 1200cc heads (changed as per John Muir's advice on getting a short stud kit) put on at time of overhaul. I always set the gaps at 0.008 inches on both intake and exhaust valves (engines later than 1964 should have 0.006 I believe). Now I read in the Haynes manual that the gaps must be set to 0.008 intake and 0.012 exhaust. Asked a local VW old timer and he says all engines must have valves set at 0.006 inches. A bit confused here. Please help. TIA Asad Karachi, Pakistan. _________________________________________________________________ Pack up or back up–use SkyDrive to transfer files or keep extra copies.
