If the scratches are visible, they will leak compression and oil. Either
hone the scratches out or get new cylinders. If you hone them much, you
better make sure the ring gap is within tolerance. I recommend finding
new (or better) cylinders.

I'm re-using the pistons and cylinders for my current 1600 rebuild. I 
had the cylinder walls honed at a shop but I see faint scratches 
running top to bottom on the walls. Not many, but one or two are deep 
enough to catch a fingernail. Has anyone reused cylinders like this?
