Good morning.
Like everyone facing high gas prices these days, I find myself driving my 72
Bug (original 1600DP to car) with 104K miles more (as long as the weather's
nice) and driving my 06 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab with 5.3 engine less.
I keep very meticulous gas mileage records on my vehicles. As I mostly drive
my Bug in town (my work commute is 4 miles one way), my avg. gas mileage over
the past 10 fill-ups has been about 20mpg. It used to be 22-23 around town.
I just replaced the front fuel filter under the tank and have added a bottle of
Techron to the tank. I keep front tires at 19 and rear at 27. Tires are
165SR15's.
Points and condenser were last changed at 98K, plugs at 94K, valve adjust at
100K.
Maybe it's time to replace all that again. Carb is a Bocar 34Pict 3 from
AirCooled.net that I installed at 100K. Distributor is stock dual vacuum
advance.
Last compression test back a couple of years ago showed good compression.
Engine runs well I believe. Sometimes it will stall when coming off high speed
and I put the clutch in but that may have been some water condensed in fuel
tank.
What kind of gas mileage should I expect running mostly in town? I'm light on
the gas on all my vehicles.
Maybe it's time for another complete tuneup but thought I'd go longer that 4-6K
between changing plugs and such.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. FYI, highest gas mileage I ever got on the
car on a trip was 36.3. Lowest on a tank I ever got was 17.2. Average over the
10 years I have owned the car is about 22.6 which would be mostly in town
driving.
Thanks,
Mike in Alabama
