Do I know the feeling! One possibility is low compression. 
Recently, my engine with a 34PICT-3 wouldn't idle. Compression values 
were way below 100. Check yours. If it's in the normal range of 125 
or so, then check for vacuum leaks. If none, then take the carb apart 
and soak it in carb cleaner.
Finally, I have a bunch of 34PICT-3 carbs in my stash that simply won't idle.
