Perhaps whatever caused the gunk was floating and the flow at idle was pushing 
a speck of it into the jet? Just remembering out loud so to speak

Hmm. Curious. Since the accelerator pump is not active during idle, 
I'm surprised that redirecting the squirt cured the no-idle problem.
