The rears should fit. If you're going to go with wider drums on the back,
I'd hunt around for a complete set of Type III rear drums. They're MASSIVE
by comparison, and you should be able to grab everything you need for less
than $100. You'll have to get a machine shop to trim off some of the
central "snout" of the drum so that the axle nuts will spin on far enough to
allow the cotter pin to be installed. You'll know how much simply by test
fitting them. A bonus with Type III rear drums is that you no longer have
to remove the axle nut to inspect them. The drums simply slip over a
mounting hub, and it is the hub that is held in place by the axle nut.

Running "wider" drums/shoes will provide some additional stopping power, but
"larger diameter" ones will provide even more. The Type III drums have
both. You might even want to consider wider tires or you'll just end up
locking them up. Most people fail to realize that tires are just a big a
factor in a car's braking system as the mechanical brakes themselves.

The rears will fit though, right? I'll probably pass the fronts along on
thesamba.

The rear brakes on a '67 are wider than on my '59 right? Better stopping
power in the rear??

Now - I'll probably end up putting a set of discs in the front. I was
trying to be cheap, so I opted for the upgraded beetle brakes.....
