Ahhh yes!!
They still play hockey. However it has been largely sidelined by cricket as
being the number one sport. Hockey is the official National Sport but strangely
it has not been promoted as it should have been. Pakistan used to be the World
champions years ago.
My observation and belief is since Hockey needs a proper ground/playing
field and comparitively more quipment, hockey sticks, goal posts n nets and
what not, its quite difficult to get the ideal circumstances for a game. Sadly
the country largely lacks proper open spaces, stadiums, clubs etc to provide a
favorable atmosphere.
In contrast, cricket is easier to play. Anyone with a couple (or even one!)
of bats and a ball can play. Sticks, stones or even chairs can be improvised to
represent the wickets. Thus its a popular street sport, played in every city
town and village even in cramped places. Nearing the World Cup or a series,
budding cricketers mushroom in almost every street, irrespective of the social
class they are from.
While on this subject, let me mention that the country has immense potential
in football/soccer too. Sadly again this sport is not promoted, maybe due to
political reasons......the best football players are from a minority ethnic
background whose forefathers were interestingly slaves of African origin bought
into the country via ships in the early ports in the province of Balochistan, a
backward and under developed area of the country. These people settled down and
took up fishing initially. They have interesting customs and traditions
including wild hula hula dances which are a must see! Ah! reminds me of another
sport this minority has. Donkey cart racing!!

travelling and want to discover the rainbow of life.
