I replaced the 009 distributor on my VW with a vacuum advanced one
that I purchased off the Samba. The distributor is labeled: *JU 4 <--,
**0 231 147 002, **111 905 205 M*. The bottom has Bosch Germany Importe
d' allemagne next to the vacuum can. Next to the clip on the right is
410 stamped into the metal and next to the left clip is another Bosch
hallmark. The distributor came pretty much stripped. It was clean, the
vacuum can worked. I purchased a new rotor, points, condenser, and a
distributor cap.

BOSCH, 02007, F00E140313, REPLACES 1237330069, MADE IN GERMANY
BOSCH, 01009, 9 231 081 332 -74U, 1 PIECE, CONTACT SET, MADE IN BRAZIL
BOSCH, 1 ST/PC, 03 001, 1 235 522 027 - 0U1, MADE IN SPAIN
BREMI, INH., 1 ST., 9038, ROTOR, MADE IN EEC (handwritten over the top
of the box is 04006)

When I got home to assemble the distributor I noticed that the wire
coming off of the points went in the wrong direction (to the right). I
went to another parts house the next day and they had the points with
the wire going back to the left (towards the vacuum can) I installed
the distributor and tried to use a static timing light to get the timing
in the ball park then I was going use a dwell meter and a strobe timing
light. I could not get the static light to light on the distributor. I
checked everything according to the How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive
manual. According to the instructions I had one of two things either a
short in the distributor or a bad condenser. I replaced the condenser
with another new Bosch condenser. I still had the same problem so I
took out a volt meter and started trying to find the short with a
continuity test. I found that the short was in the points. If I raise
the portion of the points that pivots on the shaft then the points are
no longer shorted. I would think that that the rubber bushing on the
part that pivots would prevent this but evidently not. I wonder if
there is supposed to be plastic shim that goes between the halves. Also
I notice that the top of this same shaft has a groove as if a C clip
would fit in there. Am I missing something?

thank you,
Greg
