I have a stock 72 Bug (non Super)which has the original ignition switch
(mechanical and electrical parts). There is a spring loaded button where I
insert the key that normally is supposed to pop out when I turn the key to off
and prepare to remove it from the switch.

The past year or so I have been able on occasion to accidentally pull the key
out when it is turned to off WITHOUT the button popping out. when that happens
I cannot reinsert the key to start the car.

What I have to do is to partially reinsert the key and attempt to wiggle the
key in the switch until the button does pop out. Sometimes I can do that
quickly and sometimes it takes a minute or 2.

My wife would like to drive the car but with the switch so finicky I'm afraid
to let her for fear she'll pull the key without the button popping out and get
stranded somewhere unable to reinsert the key and start the car.

Electrically the switch works fine. I have pulled it and tried to lubricate the
lock part and the plunger that goes in and out to lock the steering wheel.

It seems like I need a new lock cylinder and keys at a minimum. I hate not to
have the ignition and doors on separate keys but that's a small price to pay
for being able to drive the vehicle without the fear of getting stranded.
