Greetings Listers, I remember the Bugs having a medium thickness non-corrugated gray cardboard trunk liner in the '50s and '60s (I think by the '70s this was a piece of plastic or vinyl). And the behind the dash wiring was covered by a separate cover of molded black cardboard that screwed into the body. My '59 VW Bug still has it's trunk original liner. Though worn and creased it is still intact.
I believe I've seen several different trunk liners offered by various dealers and parts warehouses. If I were to replace mine, I would make it out of a single large piece of of cardboard such as found on a refrigerator packing box or other large piece of furniture. Once cut to size it would be easy enough to use a tea pot to steam in the curves and bends. Any exterior grade oil based enamel paint hand brushed on would provide years of protection.
