Thanks for your input,
      Woudl you happen to have pics of your 59 anywhere on the www?? Would like 
to see what kind it is, shape and all. The one I saw was clearly made for post 
68 Deluxe bugs having the cutout for the air box. I dont think it would fit the 
pre 60 trunk having the domed fuel tank. 
      The idea of fabricating our own seems good. Especially as I can use the 
original as a template for the replicas.
