Hello volks,
Car is question is my Trusty daily driver 68 bug. It runs a 61-2
vintage 40 horser with the original generator in place with an aftermarket Jap
generator piggy backing on it. Volks might remember Suley, my brother had come
up with a double pulley conversion which allows running two fanbelts for an
acceptable setup.
The time has come for the conversion to go. The bearings are starting to
act up a bit and the exercise of replacing them seems pointless. I had located
a couple of post 73 alternators. Had them serviced and all cleaned up. One is
the three pin kind with the external regulator and the other is the one pin
kind with the built in regulator. Im inclined towards the one pin kind as I
believe its a better option with the solid state regulator.
Have to ask how do I wire either of them in??? The wiring of the bug is
not pristine so I cannot follow color codes. I need a 'how to for the complete
idiot' sort of walk through for this. Like which wire goes where for the new
setup. And what to do with the wires currently on the bug (it has a Jap
regulator under the rear seat). I think the latter part would be a bit tricky.
Last but not the least....how can I assess how much current output my
present setup gives. Would like to compare it with the VW setup. Have never had
any charging problems till date (which was the reason I did not throw it all
out earlier). I run 90/100 watt headlamps too, though the horn does sound
weaker when I switch them on. Hope the VW alt would be able to cope just as
good or better.
All ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.
Best wishes and regards,
AsadKarachi, Pakistan.
